Panasonic 12-35 mm F2.8 Lens

After I figured out what camera I was going to purchase, my next step was to figure out what lenses work best. My candidate for cameras was the Panasonic GH4, and this camera specifically takes Micro 4/3rd lenses. I knew that I wanted a good wide-angle lens to utilize with the camera that was also good in low-light conditions. I also figured that it would be best to utilize a lens that was built by the camera manufacturer, Panasonic.  I did some research online and found that the Panasonic 12-35 mm F2.8 Lens would do everything that I needed from a wide-angle lens.

To make sure that this was the right lens for me I decided to give the lens a rent and test it out in normal video conditions. After trying out over a weekend I decided to purchase this lens. Now having used this lens for a few months I have determined a number of positive and negative aspects that this lens brings to the table.

Pros

  • Incredibly sharp: This is a great piece of glass that produces little, if any, Moire. The images that I have produced with this image are very sharp and clear.
  • Functionality with the GH4: One big plus with using Panasonic brand lenses with the GH4 is that you can utilize the auto-focus functions with the camera. This method is great when interview subjects or shooting wildlife photography. With the touchscreen back panel on the GH4 you can even tap on a spot in the frame and the lens will then focus on that area.
  • Power OIS: I would recommend keeping this mode on when utilizing the camera when shooting video on the move. This power OIS definitely helps smooth out the rolling shutter you would get if you had this mode turned off.

Cons

  • Crop Factor: The crop factor to me is a bit of a draw back. The 35 equivalent of this lens is approximately 24 – 70mm. This lens is more of a mid-range.
  • Back-Order item: Believe it or not this is a popular lens for any GH4 owner. I had to wait a month before I received this lens. Don’t let that stop you though. This lens was worth the wait for me.

Why I Recommend:

I recommend the Panasonic 12-35 mm F2.8 lens for a number of reasons. Namely it is a lens that you can shoot all day with on a GH4. The price may place it on the higher side, but it really does complement this camera very well. In a tight indoor shoot this lens really does excel. Please give this lens a chance.
